Scania Irizar i6S Efficient PHEV wins Driveline Technology Award at Busworld Europe 2025

Scania Irizar i6S Efficient PHEV coach is powered by a highly efficient 13-litre ‘Super’ powertrain mated to a plug-in hybrid system, promising exceptional fuel and emission savings.

The intercity coach segment is witnessing an ‘electric’ revolution, which is not just limited to pure electrics. At the Busworld Vehicle Awards 2025, the all-new Scania Irizar i6S Efficient PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid) has secured the prestigious “Label of Excellence” in the Coach category for Driveline Technology.

The accolade underscores the mastery Scania and Irizar have achieved in integrating hybrid performance into a long-distance coach. The jury has been highly appreciative of the synergy between Scania’s engineering and Irizar’s streamlined coach design. The aerodynamics and light-weight build of the Irizar coach adds character to the coach’s efficiency story.

At the heart of the hybrid coach is Scania’s new and highly efficient 13-litre ‘Super’ powertrain, which recently debuted in Scania 560G XT SUPER heavy-duty truck in India. With an added, neatly-integrated hybrid system and 6-speed powershift gearbox, the bus can run in four different modes – electric, hybrid, charge sustain and forced charging.

The hybrid system can offer an electric range of up to 80 kms on a single charge, with a power output of 290 kW, depending on the vehicle. The different drive modes together add up to a powertrain that allows extremely efficient long-distance travelling. Scania claims a fuel and emission savings of up to 40 percent in typical mixed coach traffic.

From an operator’s POV, the PHEV architecture offers the flexibility of powerful diesel performance for intercity highways while providing essential zero-emission capability for driving through increasingly regulated urban centers and low-emission zones.

This multi-technological approach ensures business continuity and compliance without compromising range or capacity. That’s perhaps the delicate balance that the Scania Irizar i6S Efficient PHEV has perfectly struck. It represents a profitable pathway for operators to accelerate their decarbonization efforts in the European markets.
