Beyond “Tin Cans”: Best New Cars to Buy for ₹8 Lakhs in India
The ₹8 lakh price bracket has become the new “sweet spot” for image-conscious Indian buyers who doesn’t want to settle for basic cars.
Recently, a friend of mine asked for a new car recommendation within a ₹5 lakh budget. I shared my previous list, but she was far from impressed. Her critique? They felt like “basic tin cans”! Functional and frugal, yes, but lacking the vibe she wanted. “Do we not get any cool cars for cheap? 😭😭”, she quirked. She promptly bumped her budget to ₹8 lakhs to find a car that is “real”, which I infer as stylish, safe, and a bit premium.
She isn’t alone. While the ₹5 lakh segment is shrinking, the ₹8 lakh bracket has become the new “sweet spot” for image-conscious Indian buyers. In this budget, things are relatively better, you don’t compromise much on design and build quality, meaningful features and techs, and you even get the aspirational “SUV” road presence that everyone craves.
If you’ve decided that “basic” isn’t for you, here are the best options to consider for under ₹8 lakhs at present. Do note that the pricing of high-end variants may exceed the budget, but that’s the sad reality. For cost-conscious buyers, entry-levels variants will surely make sense.
1. Tata Punch
Price: ₹6.30 – 12.31 lakhs*; ✔AMT ✔CNG

I would say this car has simple redefined the budget segment lately. If my friend’s concern was “cheap” and “tin cans”, Tata Punch is the antidote. With a 5-star BNCAP safety rating and a strong SUV stance, the car offers immense road presence and practicality that hatchbacks in this price range simply can’t match. It’s perfect for urban driving and highway cruises alike, supported by a reliable and efficient 1.2-litre petrol engine with CNG option. Of course, only base variants may fit the ₹8 lakhs budget mark.

2. Maruti Suzuki Swift

Price: ₹6.36 – 9.83 lakhs*; ✔AMT ✔CNG
The Swift is indeed a ‘national’ car of India. Just that its popularity is a bit dwarfed (still among top 10 selling cars) with the advent of new models in recent years. Nevertheless, the latest generation brings a sharper design and a new 1.2-litre Z-Series petrol engine that prioritizes fuel efficiency without losing that signature peppiness. The interiors and equipment levels of the hatch are a notch above its previous generations and ably take on the competition.
3. Hyundai Exter

Price: ₹6.46 – 10.79 lakhs*; ✔AMT ✔CNG
Much like Tata Punch, this is Hyundai’s answer to the micro-SUV trend. It’s a bit boxy, but stylish enough to win over hatchbacks. Its a perfect city runabout that offers a refined engine (1.2-litre 4-cylinder), premium features and spacious cabin feel than other cars in the same price bracket. It gets 6 airbags as standard, refreshed styling, and attractive paint options.
4. Maruti Suzuki Baleno
Price: ₹6.58 – 10.16 lakhs*; ✔AMT ✔CNG

For buyer who wants the most in terms of space and features, the Baleno is the ideal choice in this price bracket. It offers a sophisticated interior, incredible fuel economy, and enough rear-seat legroom to rival compact sedans. It’s a more “grown-up” car than regular hatchbacks, a bit more premium than Maruti Suzuki Swift or Hyundai Grand i10, making it a great family car choice. Needless to say, its 1.2-litre petrol engine is smooth and responsive.

5. Hyundai Aura/ Tata Tigor / Maruti Suzuki Dzire
Price: ₹6.24 – 8.78 lakhs*/ ₹6.19 – 9.96 lakhs* / ₹7.07 – 10.43 lakhs*; ✔AMT ✔CNG

Sedans, especially sub-5 metre compact sedans, may not catch much attention among young buyers these days, but they still feel a step up in status from a hatchback. There are only three options – Hyundai Aura, Tata Tigor, and Maruti Suzuki Dzire – all based on their respective hatch siblings with a trunk. They are styled to look far more expensive than the hatchbacks, loaded with premium features and packed with reliable engines. While the Aura scores on a balanced packaging, the Tigor’s coupe-like silhoutte with a sloping roofline is a “cool-looking car” that my friend can consider. You can guess what elevates the Dzire in the game – the “Maruti” proposition – although only base LXi variant is priced below ₹8 lakhs.

6. Renault Triber/ Nissan Gravite
Price: ₹6.45 – 9.76 lakhs*/ ₹6.33 – 10.36 lakhs*; ✔AMT ✔CNG

If you think the cars in this price range are “too small” for your family life, these two are the only cars that can legitimately seat 7 passengers. Both Triber and Gravite are product doubles (same wine and different bottles!), and their “cool factor” is not with punchy performance or equipment levels but utility. While the former is an established veteran, the Nissan Gravite is new to the market. Both are flashy in styling, decent for city use and even better for long-trips, with efficient engines and safety options. Again, only base models will fit the defined ₹8 lakhs budget.
7. Hyundai i20

Price: ₹6.69 – 12.23 lakhs*; ✔CVT
The new Hyundai i20 is indeed the sporty and lively car in this list. While the base variants (Era and Magna) are the ones that snugly fit into our budget, they still carry that sparkling design and sporty stance that makes the car look like it’s speeding even when it’s parked! Even in these variants, 6 airbags and ESC are standard. Interior design and quality is lightyears ahead of the budget hatchbacks. The 1.2-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine is a delight to drive, highly efficient as well.
8. Tata Altroz

Price: ₹7.18 – 12.33 lakhs*; ✔CNG ✔Diesel ✔AMT ✔DCT
The Tata Altroz is all about substance. Being the first Indian car top get 5-star Global NCAP safety rating, it isn’t just sharp-looking and premium, but is built heavy. Only two base variants are affordable (Smart and Pure), but the car is spacious, feels planted at high speeds and practical for both urban and highway driving. A 1.2-litre petrol engine does the duty in these variants.
