Tata Azura: Comprehensive analysis of Azura 1918, 1212, & 710 next-gen trucks

Tata Azura range of intermediate, light and medium-duty trucks combine heavy-duty performance and reliability with premium driver comfort and operator economics.

The Indian trucking landscape is transforming in a big way. One can notice a paradigm shift in the technological packaging and consumer preference of trucks these days. A latest case in point is the Intermediate, Light, and Medium Commercial Vehicle (ILMCV) segment.

Tata Motors recently launched the all-new Azura range designed for the emerging needs of the fast-growing ILMCV segment. These trucks are finding new found demand in applications such as e-commerce, FMCG distribution, construction materials logistics in sub-urbs, white goods delivery, agricultural produce and regional logistics.

Debuted in Auto Expo 2023 Motor Show as Tata Azura T.19 three years ago, the new truck is finally seeing light with a market launch. Essentially marking the evolution LPT intermediate range, the Azura range boasts a complete makeover of the legacy cabin with superior ergonomics, safety, and NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) levels. Car-like dashboard, improved visibility and cabin layout, and load of equipment makes this truck range exemplary.

This article dives deep into the technical specifications and summative analysis of three variants of the new truck range – the Tata Azura 1918, 1212, and 710.

This is indeed the flagship model in the Azura range, meant for the 18-tonne GVW category, essentially bridging the medium and heavy-duty segments. Powered by a 3.6-litre direct-injection diesel that is paired to a GB550 MK II 6-speed gearbox, the 1918 makes 168 hp power and 600 Nm of peak torque. The truck boasts a payload capacity of 12,600 kgs with diverse load body options from 17 ft to 24 ft.

Unlike the debutant Tata Azura T.19, the production-version features a slightly bigger capacity engine (by about 300 cc) offering 8 hp more power and 125 Nm higher torque. This truck is best suited for demanding applications such as cement, tankers, bulk goods and e-commerce involving long-haul.

Tata Motors has optimized the driveline of these trucks to achieve superior reliability and fuel efficiency. The engines are compliant to BS6 Phase 2 (OBD-II) norms and offer extended oil change intervals that can save time and money for operators. The vehicles get a standard warranty of 3 years or 300,000 kms whichever earlier. Buyers can also opt for Tata’s Fleet Edge program that enables real-time tracking, fuel monitoring, and driving data.

Some of the in-cabin features offered in the truck range includes tilt and telescopic steering wheel, fuel monitoring, gear-shift advisor, USB fast charger, reverse park assist, and so on. Seat belts are standard for driver and passengers.

On the whole, the new Tata Azura is a versatile and reliable truck range, and is more than just a cosmetic update from the LPT range of ICVs. The cabin is impressively modern and optimized, meeting ECE R29 03 crash safety standards. The vehicle range sits a notch below the Tata Ultra trucks range in terms of pricing and equipment levels. However, the Azura offer superior operational economics for the fleets.
