Daimler Buses has made public the development of its first-ever electric intercity bus – the Mercedes-Benz eIntouro. Essentially the electrified version of the brand’s popular Intouro series of high-floor intercity buses, the eIntouro is all set to premiere at the Busworld Brussels 2025 expo, with customer deliveries scheduled to commence from 2026.

The electric bus, which has been presented as a near-series prototype, shares the LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery technology from the recently unveiled Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 long-haul truck, as part of a shared parts strategy pursued by Daimler Buses along with its parent firm Daimler Truck.

Unlike the Mercedes-Benz eCitaro electric city buses that are powered by NMC3 (nickel-manganese-cobalt) batteries, the eIntouro buses will feature LFP battery packs, which can enable the latter to be much-more affordable for larger commercial adoption by private bus operators.

The e-bus will be optionally available with one or two battery packs, each with a nominal capacity of 207 kWh, thereby offering a driving range of up to 500 kms in single charge. The packs can be fast-charged with up to 300 kW within 90 minutes. Models with one battery pack can recharge in just 70 minutes, according to the manufacturer.

Daimler Buses adds that operators can utilize up to 95 percent of the total energy capacity of the LFP battery packs, with a guaranteed life service life of up to 15 years. On the whole, the eIntouro is designed for flexible applications beyond usual intercity deployments to include shuttle transport, chartered tours, or even school bus services.

Moreover, the new electric bus features a new electronics architecture that enable over-the-air (OTA) software updates for remote servicing and higher uptime. As of now, Daimler Buses will be the first in the European market to offer this technology in the intercity bus segment.

The Mercedes-Benz eIntouro will be available in two variants – a 12.18 meter and 13.09 meter variants with a seating capacity of 50 and 63 passengers respectively. The company aims to seamlessly replace the diesel powered buses in its segment with its new product in the European and alike markets across the globe.
