Indian bus maker Ashok Leyland‘s ingenious 9-metre hydrogen-powered bus, which was on news for its trial deployment in Leh, Ladakh region last year, made its first public debut at the recently held Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024 in New Delhi.

This is Ashok Leyland’s first-ever hydrogen-electric passenger bus, envisaged for premium, intercity transportation with air-conditioned coach. It is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain, coupled with a battery pack for an extended driving range.

Hydrogen is stored in three Type 4 high-pressure cylinders of 350 litre capacity each, at a storage pressure of 350 bar. The stored fuel power 80 kW fuel cell system, which generates electricity to power 71 kWh lithium-ion battery pack made of NMC chemistry cells.

With this powertrain and energy storage system in place, the bus claims a decent driving range of 250 kms with the use of air-conditioning. The electric motor that propels the hydrogen bus delivers a max power of 160 hp (120 kW) and max torque of 409 Nm.

Further, the manufacturer notes that the sustainability of the bus extends beyond its zero-emission character. The hydrogen bus features lightweight, durable, and eco-friendly panels made out of natural materials such as cotton, jute, and bamboo. While the cabin upholstery is made out of recycled PET bottles, with insulation created by re-bonding scrap foam.

The exterior, on the other hand, is finished with aqua-based paint, ensuring minimal energy consumption and a pollution-free processes, according to Ashok Leyland.
