Swedish truck giant Volvo Trucks has unveiled a new, long-haul battery-electric truck – the FH Aero Electric – with an extended driving range of up to 700 km on single charge. The product that pushes the boundaries for electric truck transport will be offered alongside the new-gen Volvo FH, FM and FMX Electric models from this year in global markets.

The flagship FH Aero Electric debuts a new driveline technology featuring new rear e-axles that integrates dual electric motors and a 6-speed gearbox. The setup frees up space in the truck’s chassis to incorporate additional battery packs. The truck, with a GCW of 48 tonnes, can haul a payload of up to 28 tonnes.

On the charging front, the e-truck supports Megawatt Charging System (MCS) charging at 700 kW. This means the truck can reach 20-80 percent SoC (State-of-charge) in about 50 minutes, well within the EU-mandated resting period for truck drivers in Europe, thereby ensuring higher uptime.

The FH, FM and FMX Electric models, on the other hand, boast an all-electric driving range of up to 470 kms, enabling transporters to switch to emission-free driving across all application and tonnage segments. These trucks feature updated dual-motor drivetrain with 8-speed purpose-built gearboxes, delivering up to 540 kW of power. Volvo Trucks claim that the new ‘Powershift’ gearboxes in both the ranges offer seamless gear shifting and produce less noise and vibration towards higher efficiency and comfortable driving experience.

The Volvo FH Aero Electric primarily competes against the likes of Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 and the newly-launched MAN eTGX. Scania‘s wide-range of electric trucks and the latest DAF XD, XF and XG+ Electric trucks will take on the new-gen Volvo FH, FM and FMX Electric.
