Volvo FH, Scania L-series trucks secure 5-stars in Euro NCAP
Volvo FH with standard cab and Scania L-series low-entry cab have scored 5-star ratings in latest Euro NCAP tests, along with ‘City Safe’ award.
Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) has published the results of its latest heavy-duty vehicle safety assessments, as part of its Safer Trucks programme in Europe. Two variants of the Volvo FH with standard cab and Scania’s L-series cab are the latest truck models to get the top safety rating, strengthening the lead of the Swedish companies in terms of safety.

Both the trucks have also earned ‘City Safe’ seal of approval from the vehicle assessment body. Euro NCAP considers that urban operating conditions that include frequent stops and starts, passing traffic, and people working near the vehicle pose substantial challenges for the OEMs in designing and delivering safe vehicles.
Volvo FH 4×2 tractor and FH 6×2 rigid models join the FM and FH Aero range of trucks that have already secured 5-stars rating. All these six trucks that are perfect for long-haul operations also meet Euro NCAP’s ‘City Safe’ criteria, thanks to the brand’s safety philosophy and good performance of active safety systems. Volvo was indeed the first truck maker to secure maximum in first ever safety rating scheme for heavy trucks in 2024.

The Scania L-series cab, on the other hand, is is part of the urban utility segment that includes refuse trucks and other vital services. It’s versatile low-entry cab is designed for demanding urban and vocational operations, offering superior visibility and safe entry and exit for occupants. This has enabled the truck to score relatively higher than Volvo FH in terms of safe driving and crash avoidance.

More importantly, the tested vehicle is an electric version of the L-cab. It comes loaded with active safety systems including emergency braking, lane departure warning with active steering, and a side-turn emergency brake that detects and reacts to cyclists turning across the vehicle’s path. Driver and side curtain airbags also provide additional passive protection.
Euro NCAP initiated Heavy-Duty Vehicle rating in 2020, with the first results released in November 2024. The truck safety assessment is based on four stages of an accident, namely safe driving, crash avoidance, crash protection, and post-crash safety.
