Ashok Leyland Boss EV: Electric 14T intermediate truck with ADAS

The production-ready, electric version of the popular Ashok Leyland Boss ICV truck boasts a driving range of up to 230 kms in single charge.

Ashok Leyland broke the covers of its much-awaited ‘Boss EV‘, the 14-tonne class electric haulage truck that has been in the making for quite sometime. The automaker displayed the production-ready version of the e-truck at the recently held Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024 in New Delhi.

This is perhaps the ‘most interesting’ and significant EV project for the brand that started years ago, the other being the ‘Dost EV‘, which begot the Switch Mobility’s IeV series of mini-trucks. That’s because, the light and intermediate trucks are the ‘most practical’ vehicles in the trucking segment for electrification with the current evolution of battery technologies.

The Boss EV in concept avatar, donning the next-gen ‘Premium N’ cab, was debuted at the Auto Expo 2023 last year. The production-version, on the other hand, retains the usual legacy cab of the Boss truck series, which is still one of the solid-looking cabin in its class.

The electric truck, with a GVW rating of 14,050 kgs and wheelbase of 5.3 metres, is powered by high-voltage battery packs of 201.5 kwh, cooled by an 8 kW chassis-mounted chiller. A 24 V – 110 Ah auxiliary battery powers the basic essentials of the truck.

Further, the chassis-integrated permanent magnet synchronous motor drives the rear axle, to generate a peak power of 240 kW (120 kw rated power) and a peak torque of 900 Nm. Ashok Leyland claims a driving range of about 230 kms in single charge for the Boss EV that supports CCS2 charging protocol.

Interestingly, the automaker has equipped the electric truck with a 2-camera ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) for warning driver for distracted driving, tail gating, and other dangerous scenarios via voice alerts.

Rest of the other aggregates of the electric truck including the suspension, braking, and hydraulic-tiltable cabin setups are akin to its diesel sibling. Maximum speed of the Boss EV is limited to 75 kmph.
