Demand for gas-powered Volvo FM, FH and FH Aero trucks on the rise

Volvo Trucks has sold more than 8,000 units of its gas-run heavy-duty trucks in global markets so far, representing a commercially viable alternative to diesel and other low-emission vehicles.

Volvo Trucks is witnessing a considerable traction for its gas-powered trucks in global markets. Last year, the company has witnessed an increase in sales of these low-emission trucks by more than 25 percent in global markets. A majority of the demand came from Europe, with Sweden, Norway, Netherlands, Spain and the UK as the leading markets.

Considering that the large-scale transporters in Western markets are keen in switching to low- or zero-emission solutions, the emerging popularity of the gas-powered trucks conveys a clear message. The gas technology is coming up as a reliable and commercially viable option among all other alternatives to emission reduction in truck transportation.

These trucks are capable of reducing their Co2 emissions by up to 100 percent, provided the gas fuel is renewable in its source. Switching from diesel to fossil-based LNG can reduction in Co2 emissions by up to 20 percent, while biogas or bio-LNG (derived from feedstock) can offer 100 percent reduction, according to the manufacturer.

Volvo’s gas trucks can support a driving range of up to 1,000 kms, making them suitable for both regional and long haul transportation. The company gas powertrain technology is state-of-the-art, based on its renowned D13 diesel engine, thereby retaining a majority of its components and performance characteristics.

The Volvo G13 gas engine that powers these trucks deploys a HPDI (High Pressure Direct Injection) technology for maximum fuel efficiency. Unlike a majority of gas engines (that are spark-ignited), this unit uses a small amount of diesel (or HVO) as ignition fuel. After starting, the engine can switch seamlessly to biogas and LNG fuels.

Volvo’s gas engine is offered in three power outputs – 420 hp, 460 hp, and 500 hp. The largest fuel tank carries 225 kg of gas to support over 1,000 kms driving range. The gas variants of the Volvo FM, FH and FH Aero models are sold in 4×2, 6×2 and 6×4 tractor or rigid axle configuration in global markets. It is to be noted that a CNG variant is available in the Volvo FE urban truck range, although the model uses a different engine using spark-plug ignition.
