Volvo FM420 LNG 4×2: Gas Power entering India | Auto Expo 2023

The Volvo FM420 LNG 4×2 tractor offers 1,000 km range with full tank of LNG, with similar performance, drivability, and even higher productivity than diesel-powered FM trucks.

Volvo Trucks India is all set to offer its LNG-powered FM420 LNG 4×2 tractor in the Indian market for on-road logistics. The company previewed its gas-powered FM truck at the Auto Expo 2023 Motor Show, bucking-up with the emerging trend of promoting LNG as a reliable alternative fuel for heavy transportation.

The company is already offering LNG-run FH and FM trucks in 420 and 460 hp power ratings with gross vehicle weights of up to 64 tonnes in Europe. The LNG trucks are undergoing trials in India to tweak them for local running conditions, and are expected to be commercially launched in the domestic market very soon.

As the name suggests, the FM420 LNG tractor is powered by G13C420 natural gas, spark-ignited engine generating 420 hp at 1,400-1,800 rpm and peak torque of 2,100 Nm at 1,000-1,400 rpm. It is mated to a 12-speed I-Shift AMT gearbox.

Since the gas engine is a derivative of the renowned D13K diesel engines, Volvo claims that its performance and efficiency are on par with diesel mills, and so are its service intervals and reliability.

Further, the LNG engines claim 20 percent less CO2 emissions than diesels. Using bio-LNG results in one-hundred percent less CO2 emissions. The truck is equipped with a 205 kg gas tank, which can support about 1,000 kms of driving range, according to Volvo Trucks.

As expected, the Volvo FM420 LNG comes loaded with ADAS features like lane keeping support, front collision warning with automatic emergency braking, driver monitoring systems, in-cabin camera, and so on. A host of connected services are also on offer from the brand in India.
