Volvo Trucks introduces next-gen technologies for pedestrian, cyclist safety

Volvo Trucks is introducing two safety systems in its trucks to ensure the safety of pedestrians and cyclists in various road scenarios.

Volvo Truck’s focus is on the road safety of vulnerable road users

The truck brand renowned for its continuous development of active safety systems, the Volvo Trucks, is now launching active collision avoidance and next-generation emergency braking systems in its FH, FM and FMX range of trucks in global markets.

The company claims that these ‘active’ safety features are a step closer towards Volvo’s long-term vision of zero accident involving its vehicles. The technologies target the road safety of vulnerable road users, especially pedestrians and cyclists, in various risk scenarios involving a Volvo truck.

Volvo’s Active Side Collision Avoidance Support, for instance, is designed to warn the truck driver of cyclists in close proximity, and if necessary, pro-actively brake to avoid a collision in the passenger side. The system, which is an evolution of an existing safety system, deploys radar sensors to identify approaching cyclists.

The Collision Warning System with Emergency Brake, on the other hand, uses both camera and radar sensors to monitor the traffic ahead of the truck. When a collision risk is detected, the system can warn the driver and even automatically engage brakes to avoid hitting the pedestrians or vehicles in front of the truck.

This active autobraking system was first introduced in 2012, and has been continuously improved ever since. Today, it has been certified to meet the stringent legislation for Advanced Emergency Brake Systems in Europe, which is yet to come into force only in 2028.

It is interesting to see how these active pedestrian safety systems originally designed for passenger cars are now innovated for large trucks. Truck driving involves a slew of blind-spot management of fellow road users, especially two-wheelers, cyclists, and pedestrians. Volvo Truck’s continuous R&D on active safety technologies sets new standards in this regard.
