Hyundai Xcient Fuel Cell truck now gets advanced H2 system, ADAS

Hyundai Xcient Fuel Cell is the world’s first mass-produced hydrogen heavy-duty truck. It now features an upgraded hydrogen fuel cell system and ADAS features for the North American market.

At the recently held Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo 2025 in California, Hyundai Motor Company unveiled its new Xcient Fuel Cell Class-8 heavy-duty truck, targeting the North American market. The hydrogen truck was launched in 2020, as part of the brand’s joint venture with Swiss company H2 Energy.

The latest upgrade largely lies with the truck’s advanced 180 kW hydrogen fuel cell system. The system integrates fuel cell stacks of 90 kW capacity each and a 72 kWh battery pack. The power system drives a 350 kW e-motor, providing maximum torque of 2,237 Nm.

Hydrogen fuel is stored in 10 hydrogen tanks with a total combined capacity of 68 kg. The new Xcient FC truck can offer a driving range of about 724 kms. It’s gross combination weight is rated at 37 tonnes.

This apart, the hydrogen truck is now available with a comprehensive suite of Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) towards enhanced safety and minimize driver fatigue. The systems includes the following:

  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA)
  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
  • Smart Cruise Control (SCC)
  • Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW)
  • Blind-Spot Collision Warning-Near (BCW-NEAR)
  • Forward Collision Warning-Near (FCW-NEAR)

In addition, the latest Hyundai Xcient FC’s boasts interior design enhancements as well. This include a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which are integrated into the center console for driver convenience and ergonomics.

Hyundai claims that its fuel cell trucks have undergone rigorous testing across diverse climates and use cases in North America since 2021. They are already in commercial operation in the Ports of Oakland and Richmond, as part of the NorCAL ZERO Project.

Outside of North America, the Xcient Fuel Cell trucks are already on sale in Switzerland and South Korea. A total of 1,600 trucks are expected to be deployed in Switzerland by the end of this year. The H2 trucks are manufactured at Hyundai’s Jeonju plant in South Korea.
