BEML High Mobility Vehicle (HMV) 12×12 defence truck platform launched
BEML HMV 12×12 is designed to enhance the operational mobility of India’s defence forces and strategic military assets.
Indian state-owned BEML Limited has recently unveiled its multi-purpose truck platform High Mobility Vehicle (HMV) 12 x 12 for defence applications. The vehicle is developed for the Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (VRDE), DRDO under the Union Ministry of Defence. The platform is expected to add value to the operational mobility of India’s defence forces and strategic military assets.

Based on the derived designs and technology from Czech manufacturer Tatra, the HMV 12×12 has undergone significant upgrades to cater to the emerging local needs of the defence logistics. BEML’s Futuristic Product Innovation and Incubation Centre (FPIIC) has worked on the platform extensively.

Expectedly, the truck is engineered for extreme terrains and climatic conditions. It can carry payloads up to 42 tons, with a platform length of 13 metres, for a range of 600 kms. The chassis can bear any superstructures without any special integration precautions. Reduced vibrations and road shocks should improve ride quality and safety of strategic or sensitive cargo.
In terms of engine and performance, the HMV 12×12 is powered by a BSIII-compliant engine that makes 500 hp of power. The diesel engine is mated to a 7-speed automatic gearbox sourced from Allison Transmission. The 62 ton GVW truck can hit a top speed of 60 kmph.

The HMV features 2-speed transfer case and lockable differentials for its 12×12 capabilities. Independent wheel suspension system with swinging semi-axles enhance the off-road capabilities of this truck. In addition, a Central tyre inflation system (CTIS) is also in place, which can be operated on the move.
On the whole, BEML’s HMV 12×12 is a strong addition to the company’s line-up of multi-purpose HMV trucks spanning 4×4, 6×6, and 8×8 axle configurations. The truck is manufactured at the company’s Palakkad complex.
