Tata Motors has claimed that its latest flagship SUV – the Tata Sierra – delivered an exceptional 29.9 kmpl in a certified run held at at NATRAX Indore for 12 straight hours. The car, powered by 1.5-litre Hyperion petrol engine, entering the India Book of Records for maximum fuel efficiency by surpassing the previous national benchmark.

At the heart of this accomplishment is the all-new, 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine nicknamed as ‘Hyperion‘, engineered to deliver high efficiency without compromising refinement, performance and drivability. Developed in-house, the ‘TGDi‘ (Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injection) engine produces 160 PS at 5,000 rpm and 255 Nm of peak torque at 1,750 to 4,000 rpm in the Sierra.

The engine’s advanced combustion system, torque-rich performance band and friction-optimised architecture ensured consistent fuel delivery and stable performance throughout the run, according to the company. This achievement stands as a testament to the engineering innovation and capability of the Hyperion powertrain.

Interestingly, the 1.5-litre Hyperion engine features Electronically controlled Variable Geometry (eVGT) and Dual Variable Valve Timing (VVT) technologies to offer peak acceleration and power whenever demanded. The engine also features sodium-cooled exhaust walls to withstand high exhaust temperatures. It is BS6 Phase 2 compliant with a three-way catalytic converter.

The Tata Sierra achieved a top speed of 222 kmph in a parallel run at the test track, although the top speed of the customer vehicles will be limited to 190 kmph. It is to be noted that both the fuel efficiency and top-speed claims are to be taken with a pinch of salt, as they were conducted in a controlled environment by trained and expert drivers under monitored conditions.
