MAN Lion’s City E electric bus with new-gen battery unveiled
The new MAN Lion’s City E features latest lithium-ion battery technology (NMC chemistry), with the battery packs assembled at the company’s in-house facility in Nuremberg.
The 2025 model year MAN Lion’s City E, the German bus maker’s battery-electric city bus range, celebrated its global premiere at the just begun UITP Summit in Hamburg. The showcased product is the Lion’s City 10 E, the 10.5 meter long e-bus, equipped with innovative driver assistance systems.

The bus range introduces “MAN BatteryPack”, produced in-house at MAN’s recently opened battery facility located at Nuremberg, Germany. They feature latest generation battery technology, essentially the Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (NMC) chemistry. The 10 E version features four battery packs towards an installed capacity of 356 kWh.
These battery packs are more efficient, lighter and have improved energy density and discharge depth. This translates to a compact packing of batteries and increased range, which has a positive effect on passenger capacity and total operating costs. Thanks to the modular battery approach, customers can tailor the battery capacity of the Lion’s City E range of electric buses to their individual requirements.

MAN is offering these electric buses in 3 variants – 10 E, 12 E and 18 E. The 12-metre bus will be available with four or five battery packs with a capacity of 356 or 445 kWh. The articulated bus (18 E), on the other hand, will feature six or seven battery packs with a capacity of 534 or 623 kWh.
According to the company, two battery usage strategies are suggested for the operators with the Lion’s City E. The ‘Maximum Range’ strategy is suitable for particularly high daily ranges of up to 380 kms. Thanks to an extended discharge depth of up to 90 percent, enough energy can be extracted per charge for longer distances.
The ‘Reliable Range’ battery usage strategy is ideal for operators who require a consistently reliable range throughout the entire service life of their fully electric buses. Continuously adapted to the ageing of the battery, the discharge depth increases steadily over the service life, starting at 65 percent. This guarantees a consistently high range of up to 270 kms under favourable conditions throughout the entire service life.

The new MAN Lion’s City E range will hit European markets later this year. With in-house assembly of battery packs, the manufacturer claims that all key components of the EVs are now “Made by MAN”. The electronics platform of the e-buses is based on the one used in MAN’s truck series, while the electric motor and transmission come from the parent Traton Group.
