2017 Honda Gienia (Honda City Hatchback) | In Pictures
Ever imagined our beloved Honda City in a hatchback avatar? That its grandeur and elegant lines taking up the form of a small car? Well, the Chinese folks are gonna appreciate the soon-to-be-launched 2017 Honda Gienia‘s, which is based on the current-generation Honda City sedan sold in India, graceful looks for sure. The 5-door car was unveiled at the 2016 Chengdu Motor Show last week, and is most likely a China-only model that may not reach our shores anytime soon.
The Gienia gets notch-back styling with stretched-out rear quarter panels, coupe-ish slant hatch door with a stunning spoiler and wiper sticking to the windshield. Up front, the car gets a ‘Solid Wing Face’ design – an aspect of contemporary Honda styling – with swayed headlamps with integrated LED DRL (again something akin to the City sedan).
The side profile is almost similar to that of the City sedan, while the truncated boot design makes all the difference. In fact, this rear styling is more balanced and well-sculptured, and goes well with the elegant lines of the Honda City. The company is tight-lipped on the interiors of the car, which is likely to be a carry-over from the City sedan, sold as Honda Griez in the Chinese market.
The new car is 4,517 mm long, 1,705 mm wide and 1,477 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,600 mm, making it way bigger than the current-generation Honda Jazz by all proportions. The technical details are also unknown as of now, but may get a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 131 hp, coupled with a 5-speed manual gearbox or a CVT automatic.
The Gienia will be assembled and marketed by Dongfeng-Honda JV in China. The notch-back is unlikely to enter the Indian market, considering its large proportions (more than 4-metre) and the market positioning of the Jazz hatchback.
