At the 2016 Auto Expo that concluded last week, home-grown truck maker Ashok Leyland unveiled India’s first Euro 6 compliant truck – the all-new 4940 Euro 6 long-haulage truck.
At the time when the whole CV segment bears the blame of being ‘dirty diesels’ leading to increasing air pollution, our domestic CV maker has presented a truck that is compliant to strict emission norms that demand a dramatic reduction in NOx and particulate matter levels as low as one-tenth of the existing BS 3 levels.
Ashok Leyland says that the new 4940 Euro 6 is powered by an all-new 8-litre 6-cylinder ‘Neptune’ series diesel engine specifically designed to meet the stringent Euro 6 norms. With a common rail direct injection system, this motor delivers 400 HP with 1600 Nm of torque at peak demand. It is paired to a 16-speed manual gearbox with range change and splitter, aided with a 430 mm diameter, Diaphragm-type clutch.
Further, the truck is equipped with the latest exhaust after treatment system to bring down emissions and deliver optimum fuel efficiency, along with a diesel oxidation catalyst, full-flow diesel particulate filter, and the selective catalyst reduction unit integrated with the silencer. Safety wise, the Euro 6 truck is equipped with electronic braking system and electronic stability control. The truck with 6×2 axle configuration has a GVW of 49 tonnes.
In terms of the exterior design, the 4940 Euro 6 truck sports a new design making a huge departure from the other AL trucks. This includes the full-black front grille, fresh profiled headlamps, blackened A-pillars, along with a taller-looking sleeper cab. Inside the cabin, the truck is marginally different from the already-on-sale Captain Series trucks with dual-tone dashboard, multi-functional steering wheel, power windows, HVAC controls. driver information TFT display, and a touch-screen infotainment display at the centre that supports navigation.
