Volkswagen Polo GTI Indian Debut – 2016 Auto Expo
VW India has unveiled the high-performance variant of the popular Polo hatch – the Polo GTI – at the just began 2016 Auto Expo, Greater Noida. This ‘hottest’ Polo version is one of the brand’s global performance model that is on sale for more than two decades. The Polo GTI will go on sale in India later this September, probably with an exceptionally high price tag.
Unlike the Polo GT models that are already in sale in India, the GTI variant is a completely tweaked from scratch for superior road performance, handling, and stability, take for instance the larger disc brakes, and race-tuned low suspension setup. The car previewed at the show was a 3-door Euro-spec model. It is likely that the car will enter Indian market as a CBU and may touch a whooping price range of around INR 25 lakhs!
Nevertheless, what you get is a pure performance machine. The Polo GTI can hit a max speed of 240 kmph with 0-100 kmph sprint assured in just 6.7 seconds. Thanks to the powerful engine under its hood – the 1.8-litre 4-cylinder TSI turbo-charged petrol delivering 192 PS (189 hp) at peak demand. It is paired to a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox.
Design wise, the GTI may seem largely as Polo from distant, but every onlookers will easily spot the difference. The glaring red GTI logo on the grille flanked by headlamp clusters with unique LED DRLs, large honeycomb front bumper air intake, 17-inch Parabolica alloy wheels with high-profile 215/40 tyres, starkly rising window line on the sides, twin exhaust tailpipe, and tinted tail lamp clusters tell you that this car is not the mundane Polo hatch we have seen before.
On the inside. the GTI badging is all over including on the chunky 3-spoke, flat-bottom steering wheel, aluminium-look pedals, and sporty seats. The black gloss interior treatment complements the sporty, brute exterior theme of the GTI.
Some of the dazzling features of the GTI includes the Fatigue detection, ESP, Hill hold, curtail airbags (along with the dual airbags), ABS with brake assist, rain sensors, cruise control, regenerative braking, and BlueMotion Technology along with Start/ Stop system.
