Tata Magic EV Electric Passenger Van – Auto Expo 2018
The Magic EV available in 7+D and 8+D seating layout.
The zero-emission battery-electric Tata Magic EV passenger vehicle aimed at last-mile connectivity was displayed at the 2018 Auto Expo, Greater Noida. Built on the popular Ace SCV platform, the Magic EV is identical to its diesel-powered siblings except for the electric powertrain in place of conventional engine.
The Magic EV features a 3-phase induction motor powered by a 72V Lithium-ion battery. The maximum output that the motor delivers is 30 kW at 4,500 rpm. This is almost double as the motor capacity and power output of the Magic electric prototype previewed to select media early last year at Tata Motor’s Pune facility. A trans-axle, single-speed gearbox transfers power to the rear wheels. The company has developed the electric powertrain with technical support from Electra EV.
The chassis of the Magic EV is ladder-frame type, which holds the steel body including a solid top that is static roll-over and roof-crush compliant. A shiny-black and sealer front grille with blueish ‘EV’ logo differentiates the electric vehicle. On the inside, the gear-shift lever is replaced by a gear selector knob on the dashboard. Buyers can choose either 7+D or 8+D seating arrangement.
The brakes in the front wheels are disc-type. The EV is likely to be offered with regenerative braking technology as a standard feature. Tata Motors claim that the Magic EV is cheaper to maintain and run, thanks to absence of period engine service and lower cost per kilometer. The company has not made public the average driving range and charging duration of the EV. It is likely that the powertrain and battery size for the final production version is yet to be finalised depending on the emerging market demands.
