Tata INTRA Next-Generation Compact Truck (SCV) – Auto Expo 2018

Next generation platform with powerful aggregates scalable to BS VI. 

The stylish and fully-loaded Tata ‘Intra’ platform of small commercial vehicle (SCV) has been debuted at the 2018 Auto Expo, Greater Noida. As an apparent successor to the popular Ace platform, the Intra comes with a wider track body and cabin, along with a maximum loading area of 8.2 inches in the segment. Two variants were on display – Intra 1 with a payload capacity of 1,000 kgs and Intra 1.1 with 1,100 kgs payload rating.

On the face of it, the new Intra looks like a mere facelift to the existing Ace platform. But a deeper inspection reveals that the compact truck is built from scratch and is quite modern in every sense. The cabin’s exterior design is very appealing, with a mix of chrome and shiny black embellishments. The interiors are impressively unique, thanks to car-like dashboard layout with air-con vents, chubby bottle holders, attractive 3-spoke steering wheel, digital instrumentation, and comfy seats. This vehicle is set to make new standards in terms of cabin comfort in the SCV category.

Tata Intra range has 2 variants with 1 tonne and 1.1 tonne payload ratings.

Two engines are on offer with the Intra. The Intra 1 is powered by a 0.8-litre DICOR engine generating 40.2 hp (30 kW) max power and 96 Nm of peak torque. A 1.4-litre DICOR diesel engine producing 70 hp (52 kW) power and 140 Nm of torque powers the Intra 1.1 variant. Both the engines are paired to a GBS 65 5-speed gearbox with single-plate, dry-friction diaphragm type clutch.

The front axle is rigid, while the rear is salisbury type. Semi-elliptical leaf springs take care of suspension on both the axles, with additional anti-roll bar up front. The front brakes are disc-type, while are rear are drum-based. The frame and the boltable fully-forward body shell has been designed from scratch, claims Tata Motors. The Intra can hit a top speed of 80 kmph, with a max gradeability rating of 40-46 percent depending on the variant.

The new Tata Intra will reach dealerships in a couple of months, according to some sources from the company.
