Mahindra electric bus india launch

Two variants with 160 km and 230 km driving range on offer.

Mahindra has introduced the battery-electric midi bus ‘eCosmo’ at the 2018 Auto Expo, Greater Noida, that has opened for public since yesterday. The fully-electric zero-emission bus built on the popular Cosmo bus platform is the company’s offering in the 9-metre e-bus segment that is fast-catching up in the Indian industry.

The eCosmo code-named ‘M3 midi bus’ is available in three length variants – T32 (7.9 metre, 32 seats), T36 (8.8 metre, 36 seats), and T40 (9.6 metre, 40 seats). The T32 version’s GVW rating is 9 tonne, T36 is rated at 9.7 tonne, and T40 at 10.2 tonne. Although the chassis frame and body shell is derived from the Cosmo platform, the eCosmo features distinctive external appearance, thanks to semi-sealed front grille, twin-headlamps, and unique paint graphics.

Mahindra claims that the eCosmo electric bus has won over the regular diesel Cosmo buses in terms of 0-30 kmph acceleration during test trials.

Mahindra has powered the electric bus with ‘permanent magnet variable reluctance direct drive‘ that derives energy from Lithium-ion battery pack stored at the rear of the bus. The electric powertrain generates a max power of 160 kW at 1,016 rpm and a max torque of 1,550 Nm at 917 rpm. Depending on the battery pack, the eCosmo can drive up to 160 km or 230 km (extended battery variant) on a single charge.

A DC fast charger can replenish the batteries in just 1 hour, according to the company. The electric bus can hit a top speed of 75 kmph, with 0-30 kmph acceleration in just 5 seconds. It is also equipped with pneumatic, dual-circuit S-cam brake with auto slack adjusters.

Mahindra enjoys the first-mover advantage of being the largest producer of electric vehicles in India. Its EV development wing ‘Mahindra Electric‘ has showcased a wide range of EVs across segments at the Auto Expo this year.
