JBM Solaris Eco-Life 12m Electric Bus – Auto Expo 2018

JBM Eco-Life battery bus

Dual battery charging option including an over-head pantograph and plug-in charging system.

At the 2018 Auto Expo that ended this week, JBM Solaris Electric Vehicles has launched the all-new, locally-built ‘Eco-Life’ battery-electric 12-metre city bus in pursuit of sustainable, zero-emission public transport. Deriving the electric powertrain and battery components from the Eco-Life electric bus concept that was showcased at 2016 Auto Expo, the new production-ready e-bus sits on the localised JBM CityLife platform.

The 18-tonne GVW zero-emission electric bus is claimed to save around 959 equivalent tons of carbon dioxide and 350,000 liters of diesel over 10 years of operation. An advanced Lithium-ion battery pack with liquid-cooling powers the high torque traction motors of 160-215 kW power rating. The motors are directly interfaced with the standard rear differential without the need for a intermediate gearbox.

JBM says that the e-bus can run 150-200 kms in 10-15 hours of city bus operation, with a top speed of 75 kmph, depending on the operation conditions. But the real highlight of this bus is its flexible charging system, consisting of both pantograph for ‘smart’ fast charging and CCS standard certified plug-in-charger. Multiple charging options widen the scope of electric buses in challenging operational environments and geographical conditions. Power regeneration from braking is also available.

JBM Solaris Eco-Life e-bus (production variant) features digital driver info system and advanced Passenger Information system with GPS connectivity and CCTV camera.

In terms of design, the new Eco-Life is largely similar to the diesel/ CNG-powered JBM CityLife buses except for sticker graphics and roof design. The monocoque structure with aluminium panels is corrosion-resistant and durable for prolonged usage, claims the manufacturer. The inverted portal axle technology allows for more flat rear area inside the cabin, making the seating and aisle area more spacious. Large windshield and side window area offers panoramic outside view to occupants. Two seating options available – 38 seats (UBS II) and 42 seats (CMVR) – excluding the driver.

The driver work space is neatly conceived, thanks to 2-spoke steering wheel, easy-to-access controls, clear dials with digital driver info screen, and a multi-function passenger information system (PIS) screen connected to GPS. Air-conditioning is available, along with centrally-monitored live camera and fire detection and suppression system.

The JBM Solaris Eco-Life features electronically-controlled air-suspension (ECAS) with independent front suspension. Electronic braking system that includes disc brakes for all four wheels, assisted by ABS, is offered as well. The buses are manufacturer at JBM Auto’s facility in Faridabad.
